New Education Minister Jennifer Rankine says parents should have been told about school sex assault cases

Speaking to adelaidenow yesterday, a week after taking on the Education and Child Development portfolio, Ms Rankine said she would regain parents' trust by ensuring there were clear policies and guidelines to follow when these situations arise.

"I put myself in the place of a parent, having been a parent of two boys who attended a public school, and I think what is it that I would need to know to make sure my boys were safe'," she said.

"I would have wanted to know if my boys were at a school that someone had been charged with and cheap ugg bailey button boots convicted of the sexual assault of another child at that school.

"Parent trust is fundamental to our school system, parents are entitled to have confidence when they drop their child off at school that they are safe."

Parents at a western suburbs school were only told late last year that Mark Christopher Harvey, who had been in charge of the outofhours school care program, was convicted in February 2012 of unlawful sexual intercourse with a young girl in 2010.

Ms Rankine said the situation had been a wakeup call for the Education Department uggs on sale and other government agencies, which were now reviewing policies about what advice to give and when to give it.

"Every situation is different . but you have to go with first and foremost the protection of children," she said.

"We then have to make sure we don't just simply persecute or ruin someone's life based on false allegations but we have to make sure when an allegation is made it's fully investigated and children need to be protected from that point."

Ms Rankine said she was looking forward to again working with disadvantaged families to ensure they had every opportunity to succeed. "Your family circumstances shouldn't be an indictment on your ability," she said.

Opposition education spokesman David Pisoni yesterday called on Ms Rankine to make the SACE research project optional and reinstate five subjects in Year 12.
